I can say that the trip to the border was a crappy one if you want to make it there in a decent amount of time. We headed up the highway to Bangor and then east. We did about 500 miles the first day. My rear tire had a decent flat spot just from that day.

My initial planning is 3 (2.5?) days there, 3(4) days to ride around and 3 days back

You can definitely take nice roads to Maine but they're usually up into NH then head over into Maine. I'd say 2.5 days and you can get over to the border rather easily. We crossed the border over in Calais Maine. Head up 16 in NH then out 2 into Maine. We headed up 95 which sucked, then east on 9.

Yeah, its doing the stretch of 95 I would just as soon miss, even if it takes a bit longer.  We did OK with the crossings last time, and we probably crossed too many times.  Maybe I can catch up with the band from Prince Edward island I've been following around. (Ten Strings and a Goatskin).
