maintenance day
« on: April 24, 2011, 09:17:14 PM »
moving this out of tag-o-rama.

If you do a mntc day and I'm around, I'd like to ride up and watch/help.  On that topic- how do you dispose of old brake fluid?

The bolt head is rounded off. Quite frustrating. I'm just ready to move on.

I'm not working today, want me to stop by?   I could also use the excuse of having to pick up decals

the same way you dispose of old engine oil and antifreeze.  the place that sells fluids has to accept old stuff for recycling / disposal.

I've always disposed of oil at the dump (or by putting it in the beemer where is goes away pretty quickly).  I'll check autozione on the other fluids, and how they do it.  Thanks.

My bike, slightly undressed with the lower fairings off for the nice fresh brake fluid and antifreeze I put in today.  The lowers will stay off till I go after the plugs, breather, and air filter.  I'll probably do a second flush on the antifeeze and brake fluid too.  Bike does not use much and that part was fairly easy.

Any thoughts of Fork oil?  Changing might be  on my list, and I'm told the 5W my bike comes with is not the best.  I looked online, can get 5, 7, 10 15....

I change mine every 3 years.  I pull the forks and disassemble.  replace the seals and dust wipes.
then reassemble and replace.    not a small job.

I was just  thinking a drain and fill on the oil this year.  I'm not sure doing much more for the SV would yield any real benefit, but the fresh oil should keep the rest in better shape.
Also not sure whether I;l get a front stand, or use a padeye from the barn rafters to hold up the front.   I'll need to pull the front tire before the season is out too.

I was going to look at the forks today.  The FAQ on the SV website suggests getting a veterinary catheter to pull the oil, so my guess is "no".  My last Honda had  drain plugs and it made regular oil changes easy.

the MFGs stopped putting fork drains on fork tubes in the mid 80's as far as I know....    the problem with your method is you won't get all the oil out of the tube.  but if its not too bad it really doesn't matter.   just measure the oil level, don't just pore in a specific volume.  even if you measure what comes out.
