Here are two GREAT places, one in the east, one in the west
« Reply #44 on: August 07, 2009, 07:20:20 PM »
If you're in the western end of the state....

The Sycamore Drive-In in Bethel. Intersection of 302 and 53.

Go for the signature Dagwood burger. I like mine with cheese and bacon, but the burger itself is what makes it great. They make the edges of the patty very thin, and get them all brown and crispy. Awesome. Pair it with fries and a chocolate shake for a true American meal.

Strong '50s theme. They do car cruise nights in the summer.

It's easy access to here from the ride up through Kent and the Housatonic Meadows park towards Canaan... one of the scenic rides on the CT rider map.

=====================================

If you're in the eastern end of the state, it's Abbott's, on Pearl St. in Noank. GREAT lobster, oysters, etc. Outdoors, very informal, the kind of place where you order at a window and they call your number.

My preferred item there is the hot lobster roll, offset by the fruit and cheese plate.

The chowder is really different and actually quite authentic old-New England. It's broth-based, not milk-based.

Prices are moderately steep (it's lobster, not factory-farm chicken!) but it's worth it.
